Should You Buy Refurbished? What You Actually Get for the Lower Price
Refurbished devices are tested and graded before resale.
Refurbished electronics have gone from a niche to the mainstream. Phones, laptops and tablets that have been returned, repaired or traded in are tested and sold again, often for well under the price of a new one.
Refurbished is not the same as second-hand
A refurbished device should have been checked, cleaned, repaired where needed and reset. A second-hand device bought privately comes as it is.
Understand the grades
Most sellers grade devices by their cosmetic condition, from "like new" to visible scratches. The grade usually affects only the looks, but check what each grade means for that seller.
Check the battery
Battery health is the one thing that most affects day-to-day use. Good sellers state a minimum battery capacity or fit a new battery.
Look for a warranty
A reputable refurbisher offers a warranty of at least 12 months. You also have the same legal rights as with any other purchase from a business.
Check software support
Older models eventually stop receiving security updates. Before buying, check how long the manufacturer is likely to keep supporting that model.
